The male and female Acorn Woodpecker look similar, but the male has a solid red crown while the female has a black band between the forehead and the red crown. Acorn Woodpeckers diet consists of insects, acorns, sap and fruits.
The most Acorn Woodpeckers that I have ever seen at one time was at the Toro Regional Park near Salinas. I was there in June and I saw over 20 Acorn Woodpeckers.
