:Nesting: King Vultures nests are built on the ground usually in natural cavities such as treestumps, hollow logs, etc. The nests are usually unlined and usually the female lays only one egg. Both parents incubate, brood and feed the chick. The chicks are semi-altricial. They are considered altricial because the chicks are helpless at birth. They are 'semi-' because they have downy feathers and their eyes are open at birth. Their nest consists of very little material; usually just scratched out of the existing substrate. Males and females appear identical in coloration and size. The King Vulture usually lays a solitary egg. Both parents share the responsibilities of incubation. Chicks are black when born and retain this color of plumage for almost three years before obtaining the adult white plumage.
