Pelecanus occidentalis Length: 42-54"

The Brown Pelican is the smallest of the pelicans. It dives for its fish. You can usually see them year around, but more of a concentration in late summer and early fall. One of my favorite memories is late summer at Middle Harbor Park in Oakland. It was a windy day and the Brown Pelicans looked like they were playing in the water by doing somersaults as they landed. (See the movie below.) They can also look quite funny when they land.
