The Greater Scaup is a diving duck and is very similar to the Lesser Scaup. The Greater Scaup is slightly larger, does not have the pointed head, and the black tip of the beak is wider than a Lesser Scaup. They are quite common in the Bay Area. They are divers and mainly eat mollusks and aquatic plants. One picture below shows a female eating a mollusk.
