Charadrius vociferus Length: 9-10.5"

Killdeer must be the most common of the Plovers. You can see them throughout the U.S. Killdeer are recognizable by the shortish bill and the double row of black bands around its breast. If you are in an area where they have young, they will try and distract you with their calls.

While I see them everywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area, I was surprised when I saw them in Michigan and Texas. I had not realized how widespread they were.
