Ixobrychus exilis Length: 13"

The Least Bittern is the smallest heron found in the Americas. They are found in fresh and brackish water marshes with tall and dense vegetation. They are mostly found on the eastern half of the U.S., but I have seen one in Martinez, CA. It was rare enough that birders in quite large numbers came out to see it.

I like the way Least Bitterns use their feet to attach themselves to the grasses. They are stable enough to still be able to find and catch fish, a major part of their diet. They also eat insects.
