Anas Clypeata Length: 19"

The Northern Shoveler is a common winter bird in the Bay Area. You can see them by the hundreds in various locations. They are easy to spot because of their broad spatulated bill.

Northern Shovelers are dabbling ducks. Unlike most dabbling ducks, Northern Shoveler's have a specialized beak for straining out food when they move their beak across the surface of the water. They eat small aquatic animals and plants.
