Sphyrapicus nuchalis Length: 8.5"

Previously, the Red-breasted Sapsucker, the Red-naped Sapsucker and the Yellow-belied Sapsucker were all considered one species. Now they are considered as three separate species. The Red-breasted Sapsucker is found on the west coast in North America. Red-breasted Sapsuckers, and other Sapsuckers, have shorter tongues than other woodpeckers and their tongues have stiff hairs at the tip. This allows them to sip sap. They also will eat the insects trapped in the sap.
