Podiceps grisegena Length: 17-23"

The Red-necked Grebe breeds in the northwest part of North America and winters on both coasts. Grebe's are excellent swimmers and divers. They eat mostly fish, but will also eat crustaceans, mollusks, insects and some aquatic plants. They are awkward on land and need lots of space for taking off and landing.

These Grebes are not common in the Bay Area.
