The Red-shouldered Hawk red shoulder is a distinctive field mark. They are fairly common in the Bay Area though I don't see them quite as frequently as the Red-tailed Hawk. I have noticed that they I will find them more in the interior of a tree while Red-tailed Hawks will be perching on top.
