The Bay-breasted Warbler breeds in Canada and northern New England. They winter in northwest South America and southern Central America. During the breeding seasons the males are easily recognized by their chestnut and black head and upperparts.

They feed on insects especially the spruce budworm. During the winter they will also eat berries and nectar.
