Llano Seco Unit
Llano Seco Unit, CA
The Llano Seco Unit is part of the Sacramento Wildlife Refuge but it is a lot different than the Colusa or Sacramento Wildlife Refuges. For one thing, the area you can visit is a lot smaller and there is no car route. The pluses is that you can walk about and there are a couple of viewing platforms.
It is a good place to see Sandhill Cranes and White-faced Ibis. One of the neat things about visiting Llano Seco is getting there. You travel through beautiful farmland and orchards and I have see a lot of hawks perching on the power poles.
Finding this place on the maps or online can be a bit hard. Directions from I5 are: Take exit 60 (after Sacramento NWR) and go east, Road 60 turns into Road 61 at a jog left, than Highway 162 at the jog left, continue to Road Z on your left and it will jog right to Seven Mile Road. The first area labeled Llano Seco is for hunting, the second Llano Seco Unit is the one you want.
