New Orleans Area

New Orleans Area

Depending on the time you have, there are some good places within the city of New Orleans and in the areas around it. I have only scratched the surface. More places to visit can be found at the New Orleans Audubon page and definitely check out American's Wetland Foundation pages. I have found their guides invaluable for Southern Louisiana.

Audubon Park and Audubon Zoo
The Audubon Zoo is located within the park. Both places are worth visiting. The area around the park is great for Black-bellied Whistling Ducks (I have seen hundreds there), Anhingas, Grebes, etc. The Zoo has a pond with a fair number of imported ducks, swans, cormorants, and pelicans. Along with these birds quite a few "wild" birds like the area also. It was neat watching the Snowy Egrets land on the Pelicans back trying to get the fish that had been thrown to the Pelican.
City Park
I have only visited this park and found quite a few ducks and other water birds such as herons, egrets. It is considered to be a good place to bird.
Jean Lafitte National Historical Park
A good place to start is the Visitor's Center. They can give you advice as to where to go. There is also a nice boardwalk walk at the center. I had my best luck right behind the center.
Jean Lafitte Nature Study Park
The one entrance I know about, is right next to the elementary school. There must be other ways in, but this is what we found. The walkways are raised and you walk through some beautiful trees. Late January was probably not the best time for birds, but I did see a few and enjoyed the area.
