The Western Tanager was formerly placed in the tanager family and is now in the cardinal family. They breed in the western U.S. up through southern Alaska. They winter in Central America and parts of western Mexico.
They are sexually dimorphic with the breeding male black and yellow with a bright red head. The female is pale yellow and brown. The male is a more spectacular bird with its reddish head during breeding season. Their diet consists of insects and fruit.
