The Fulvous-crested Tanager is found in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela. They are sexually dimorphic with the male mostly black with a white patch on the shoulder, rufous flanks and a rufous stripe on crown (frequently hidden). Females upperparts are mostly gray and olive colored, underparts yellowish.
Diet consists of fruit and insects.
