The Fire-tufted Barbet is found in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand in tropical and subtropical forests. They are captured for use as pets. While their numbers are declining, they are still considered by the IUCN as 'Least Concern'.
They eat primarily fruit, especially figs, and some insects.
