Red-breasted Sapsucker - Sphyrapicus ruber

The Red-breasted Sapsucker is found in North America on the west coast. They are very closely related to the Red-naped Sapsucker. Red-breasted Sapsuckers, and other Sapsuckers, have shorter tongues than other woodpeckers and their tongues have stiff hairs at the tip. This allows them to sip sap. They also will eat the insects trapped in the sap.
