The Black-legged Kittiwake is a seabird in the gull family. In North America, they breed on both coasts: the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering and Chukchi seas. They migrate south along the coasts during winter. They are surface-feeders and fish is their primary diet. They will also eat waste from sea-going ships.
I was lucky to see them breeding on a glacier cruise ship out of Seward, Alaska. I recommend such a trip.
