Middle Harbor Park

Middle Harbor Park, Oakland, CA

This park is a relatively unknown jewel. A few years ago in late July, I saw up close Caspian, Least, and Forster Terns, all at the same time. Another time, I saw over 50 Brown Pelicans frolicking in the water in a heavy wind. It is also a good place to find a Snowy Plover in early Fall. Besides the birds, there are great views of San Francisco and you get to watch the container ships come in and be unloaded by the big cranes.

Other shorebirds that you can regularly see are Black Oystercatchers, various sandpipers, Yellowlegs, Willets, etc. One day hundreds of sandpipers were flying overhead in formation. Thrilling!
