The White-backed Duck is a diving duck that is closely related to whistling ducks. There are two subspecies of this duck. The first subspecies lives in southern Africa and and the second subspecies lives on Madagascar where it is an endangered species.
Their diet consists of aquatic plant seeds and aquatic plant parts. They also eat a small amount of midge larvae.
